Solar Decathlon: Kick-off for the construction of the houses in Wuppertal
The Solar Decathlon is the world's largest university competition for sustainable construction and living. For the first time, this international competition is taking place in Germany this year. Hundreds of international students will showcase tangible examples of beautiful, environmentally friendly, and affordable buildings in Wuppertal from June 10th to June 26th.
On May 19th, the international teams arrived in Wuppertal. The official groundbreaking for the Solar Campus was initiated with a parade of over 300 students through the city center. Following that, organizers from the University of Wuppertal and representatives of project partners, including the City of Wuppertal, WSW, Utopiastadt, Wuppertal Institute, and Neue Effizienz, welcomed the participants.
Starting from Friday, May 20th, the students are actively engaged on the construction site every day. They will spend two weeks building their sixteen prototypes, each with up to 110 square meters of living space, for the grand event in June. 'The Solar Decathlon is a blend of sustainability festival and experiential exhibition. Here, top-notch architecture meets live music, gastronomy meets research, and craftsmanship meets celebration. We invite everyone to be part of this unique experience,' said Project Director Dr. Daniel Lorberg.
