Studies

The course of study in the master’s program in transport engineering (M. Sc.) is both application- and research-oriented. It enables graduates, building on the basic knowledge imparted during their studies, to independently develop new fields of knowledge in the sense of lifelong learning. The taught methods can be implemented through practical exercises to handle the new challenges that arise in professional practice.

Admission requirements and application

The requirements for admission to the Master's program in Industrial Transport Engineering are fulfilled for those who have:


Passed the Bachelor's or Diploma examination in the study program Transport Engineering and Management or an at least equivalent study program at a university at least with the grade "satisfactory".

An equivalence of the courses of study is given if at least 90 credit points (LP) of the bachelor's degree in Transport Engineering and Management have been earned in another course of study (in particular Transport Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transport Economics, Civil Engineering, Economics). The 90 LP are to be differentiated as follows:

 

 

  • At least 30 LP from the field of "Methods" (in particular modules such as mathematics, statistics, computer science);
  • At least 30 LP from the area of "Economics" (in particular modules such as business administration, economics, law);
  •  At least 30 LP from the area of "Traffic Engineering" (in particular modules such as traffic planning and systems, traffic engineering, rail and freight traffic, urban planning, road construction and design).

The examination board is entitled to make admission to the master's program dependent on additional performance records and subject examinations from the bachelor's program.

Admission to the program is possible at the beginning of each semester.

Please send your written application and the request for examination of the admission requirements to the Central Examination Office of the Faculty of Civil Engineering (Ms. Rembold-Busch).

For a quick check of the equivalence of your Bachelor's degree and possible recognition of your previous credits, we kindly ask you to fill in the recognition form and enclose it with your application to the chair of the examination board.

Course of studies and content

The Master's program in Industrial Transportation Engineering has a modular structure (see graphic). In each semester, 30 credit points must be attained in various modules, and a total of 120 credit points must be attained during the course of study.



In the module block Traffic Engineering and Law, the knowledge of traffic engineering is again expanded with a focus on analysis skills. Furthermore, the module block practical phases includes a process-oriented project in traffic and infrastructure planning, which e.g. accompanies an urban planning, traffic and infrastructural design and development of new areas from a technical and economic point of view. Finally, students specialize in one of the three offered specializations in the module block Transportation Engineering and Law which through the students are expected to expand their knowledge of transportation engineering with a focus on analytical skills.

Furthermore, the module block practical phases includes a process-oriented project in traffic and infrastructure planning, which e.g. accompanies an urban planning, traffic and infrastructural design and evolving new development areas from a technical and economic point of view. Finally, students specialize in one of the three offered specializations in the module block Advanced Studies: Road Traffic Management, Public Transport Management or Freight Transport Logistics.

The final module is the Master's thesis, a comprehensive scientific paper in which the students independently and successfully work on a problem from the field of transport engineering using scientific methods. As a rule, the thesis is supervised across all disciplines.
